Fantastic experience: Anuj (AJ) Malik has been our travel agent at Merlin Travel in Mississauga for more than a year now booking trips to the Dominican Republic. Some problems with the airline were resolved with his help. In October 2024 we wanted a January 2025 Sandals' vacation in Curacao. Despite limited room availability, he booked my wife and I into a luxurious ground floor swim up room overlooking the ocean. And business class seats on Air Canada. AJ then contacted Air Canada to request a wheel chair at the airports in Toronto and Curacao. Then booked another wheel chair at Sandals. All this without us asking. We just mentioned mobility issues and he took charge to make our vacation easier to get around. We have more travels planned in 2025 and AJ is our go to guy to book our trips.

After a very frustrating change of events with flight cancellations and lack of proper communication from the airline workers on how to fix our situation, Anuj answered our call and stayed past working hours to assist us while at the airport and also the next day. He worked very hard to make sure the airline got us new flights after what occurred, without paying extra as well. My family and I are very grateful that he went above and beyond to correct what was already a very stressful change of events, to ensure we had our trip we bought through them. 10/10 service!!!

Negative experience: Charged me so much in hotel reservations, as compared to actual price cost me $15,000CAD for two persons, only plane tickets and hotel reservations for two weeks in italy. Very disappointed,

Negative experience: Anuj is great when things are vanilla and going according to a plan where no travel agent is really needed. But he’s woefully helpless when things don’t go according to plan. Exactly the time you need an experienced travel agent, Anuj falls apart. I had an unexpected medical emergency that required me to cancel my trip late into my booking. I tried to rely on Anuj’s experience to navigate this new situation. Anuj was absolutely unhelpful. Not only did he provide no solutions to the problem I was facing, he offered no real value other than being a blocker between me and the travel company (Air Transat). He spent more time telling me about the the travel industry than trying to help me in my situation The final straw that lead me to this review was when I noticed that my change of booking (from double to single) still had my name on it. I contacted Anuj days before the departure date asking him to confirm if it would be an issue, he assured me it would not. I told him that the hotel was telling me that my name should not be on the booking anymore, he said it will be okay. Come day of departure, the resort as expected didn’t allow my partner to get a room because my name was still on the reservation. Even though we paid to have the occupancy changed from double to single. Even after calling up Anuj during this period (1 hour wait for my partner, being told she couldn’t get a room), Anuj was unable to do anything to resolve it At the end of the day, a representative of Air transat on the ground at the resort resolved the issue for my partner. Travel agents can all do the basics. Especially when things go without a hitch. But you really need them when things don’t go according to plan. You need them to lean on their expertise and experience. Anuj did not lean on any experience. He had no solutions based on past experience. He simply was a problematic middleman who got in the way- that resulted in an hour long wait, a crying woman in another country.

Fantastic experience: I contacted Marlin Travel to help arrange our recent trip to Punta Cana, after trying several other agencies only to find they are not open for in-person service. Call me old fashioned, but I'd like to see the person I'm dealing with face to face (even with masks) and look them in the eyes when I am paying over $8k for a much needed and long delayed vacation package. The advice that we got from AJ at Merlin about the destination and resorts was very helpful in making our choice, and the help with the booking was really good. I had tried other travel agencies before, and they just tell you to do things like reserving your seats on the flight on your own to save money. When you tell them you'd prefer to pay the extra $50 just to have ease of mind, they refuse to help, and you end up separated from your spouse and family and sitting next to strangers for the duration of both flights. We were very happy with the premium treatment at the airports, and being assured we sat together on the plane. Since COVID is still around and one cannot guarantee remaining COVID-free during the trip, the travel medical insurance package that AJ offered for our trip to Punta Cana, which includes COVID coverage, was great and much better than the 2 other offers I got! Especially since we do not have travel insurance from our employers. The ease of mind that we got knowing we are insured was also good. Finally, the info that AJ provided regarding border requirements for both flights was spot on. We actually noticed how others had trouble with airport authorities because they didn't have that info. I would highly recommend that you try the services that Merlin Travel Heartland offers. Ask for AJ in person, and I promise you that you will not be disappointed. I will definitely go back to him for our next trip.
