Expérience négative: We were so disappointed with the Arctic Chalet. They tout themselves as being pet-friendly. They are not. While the pet fee is published online (although the amount varies and most of their paperwork says $20 - we were charged $25), they made no mention of the $200 deposit until after we had paid for the room and the extra $50 (2 night pet fee). A month later Arctic Chalet has still not released the pre-authorization and when asked, their response was essentially it is my problem and I should contact the bank if I want it back. I have paid pet deposits before and they are always refunded within 3-4 days. Another issue is the place is not at all pet-friendly despite them advertising it is. You aren't allowed to walk your dog anywhere on the property because of the huskies. The literature at the property tells you to take them into town and walk them by the river - so hardly dog-friendly. The log cabin was crammed down a driveway with so many vehicles all over the show. It was jammed in between another unit. Hardly the beautiful place to sit and watch the northern lights they claim on their website. The cabin itself smelled so bad. It was like a men's urinal and totally disgusting. The shower looked like it hadn't even been completed. They had a coffee maker but not coffee. The heating control did not work and the cabin was uncomfortably hot. The tv did not work. The check in was a nightmare and took forever. I'm not sure the woman knew what she was doing. She forgot to add tax then added to much tax then needed the receipt back because she had to write all the details for the taxman on it (no idea what that was about). All in all this was not a nice place to stay. I would not recommend it at all.

Arctic Chalet LTD

I am sorry that your experience with us was not a particularly happy one. Unfortunately we have no records of your stay under this name so I can’t pinpoint the details of your reservation. Perhaps you booked in under another name, but I will never the less try to respond to some of your concerns. I can assure you that we are pet-friendly and instructions about where guests can walk their dogs is clearly written on the information sheet that is provided in all guest rooms. It states that guests can take their dogs out the driveway and down Carn road for a nice quiet walk to the river. No one has ever been asked to take their dogs to town for a walk… The $25 fee for pet in room and the $200 pre-authorization, I think, are pretty standard. All pre-authorizations on credit cards are controlled by the client’s bank, not us, and usually they expire within a week or a few days. Please contact your bank. The unpleasant smell that you experienced might have been due to some plumbing problems or you might have smelled the grey water that had been just pumped out into the drainage system behind the cabin, pretty normal. Another scenario could have been that you arrived right after the vacuum truck sucked out the sewer tank, including all of the traps in the plumbing! We try to make a point of flushing toilets right after the truck leaves the yard which is an easy fix for any smells that could come up from the tank when the traps are empty. It is sometimes challenging having to deal with holding tanks for water and sewer above ground when you live on permafrost but it rarely creates a big problem. As for the delay in checking you in, we did have a new person in the office one day when everyone else was off duty resting and the internet was acting up during her shift. I am so sorry for the line-up and for the frustration you experienced when you may have been tired from travelling and just wanted to get to your room to get some rest as quickly as possible.

Expérience négative: Arctic chalet was the worst tour company I have ever had to deal with. The owner, Judi, was the most racist individual I have ever met. Some of their other employees, like Lea and Clemens, were amazing. But it was hard to look past the blatant racism and white supremacist attitude Judi presented. During our Tuk tour, Judi would continuously make racist comments about the indigenous people living in the Northwest Territories, and even decided to go on about how residential schools were actually a “positive experience” for the students, as it “gave them a chance to get away from their primitive camps, and for them to become true Canadians”. It would’ve been completely atrocious for her to even suggest this idea, let alone flat out say it. And it wasn’t a few comments here and there either. In total, our Tuk tour took about 7-8 hours. And throughout that ENTIRE time period, she would make disgusting remarks about the indigenous people and their ways of life. Nearing the last hour or so of our trip, Judi began to preach her religious beliefs to us, which was completely unrelated to our tour in the first place. She would sidetrack away entirely from the purpose of the tour, and ramble on about her personal life, her religion, and at the end, gave us these strange “bible health guides”. It was completely unprofessional, unnecessary, and unwanted. If I’m going to pay for a tour, I’d like to hear about the area I’m in, not about some random persons backstory. Furthermore, the drive itself was incredibly rough with Judi. The door for the sprinter van we travelled in was held together by duct tape, silly putty, and hopes and dreams. The overhead storage racks above our heads were shaking the entire time, and the screws holding them in place were falling out as we went on. Judi was not only aware of this issue, but refused to even fix it. By the end of the drive, there was only a small fraction of screws left holding the rack in place, and I was legitimately worried it was on the verge of collapsing on-top of us. Additionally, Judi was a reckless driver. She would refuse to slow down when instructed to by construction workers doing roadwork, she would erratically slam on the breaks in the middle of the highway, would nearly swerve off the road and then violently recorrect it, and would even drive on the wrong side of the road. She forced multiple oncoming vehicles to also switch to the wrong side of the road because she refused to stay on the right hand side. Not only was she doing this on straight parts of the road, she would be doing this around blind corners, where there was no way to tell if there was oncoming traffic. She wouldn’t look where she was driving, and would instead have one hand on the steering wheel, another on her PA system, staring into the back of the van rather than looking ahead. Overall, arctic chalet is a company I would strongly advise to not use. If you would like to come to the arctic circle and visit places like Inuvik or Tuk, it’s better to just get your own vehicle and tour the areas yourself, or to find another company. I will not be going back to Arctic Chalet again.

Arctic Chalet LTD

I was very surprised to read this review and am so sorry that your experience on my tour was so upsetting, especially after having had such good feedback from many of the other people in the youth group that you were a part of and who seemed to appreciated the narrative that I gave while traveling the road from Inuvik to Tuk.

For clarification, I would like to address some of the issues that you have brought up regarding my comments during this tour which seemed highly offensive to you personally.

First of all, my comments about how the “Good Lord” provides firewood and building materials by sending driftwood down the Mackenzie River to the people living on the Arctic coast well above the tree line, certainly were not intended to offend you. It is only natural for me to refer to God as the Creator and Provider of all good things in nature.

As for the magazine, I made a few copies available at the end of the tour because one of the tour leaders in your group started asking me questions about health issues and was very interested in learning about our lifestyle and how it has benefitted my husband and myself in our senior years.

Now, to your comments regarding me as being a “racist” certainly are not in line with how I really feel about the native people that share this beautiful land with us.

As you might remember, the subject of residential schools came up when I showed you the mission boat in Tuk which took many of the children from their camps along the coast to town for schooling. Much has been written about the negative impact that the residential schools had on native life. Having lived in this area for over 40 years I have personally heard both the very sad stories and the stories of those whose experience was positive. In fact, our tour partner in Tuk recently told me that her experience was a good one. I feel that it is important to give a balanced view on this subject and I think that many people would be happy to hear about the positive stories as well.

During my tour I pointed out many good things that I admire about the Inuvialuit, such as how they travel over their land without damaging the tundra in summer and how they made sure that all of the gravel pits along the road were out of sight of travellers as they do take pride in their beautiful land. I talked about their good hunting practices that help to preserve the Polar bear population so that it is remaining stable.

As for your evaluation about our accommodations, I need to point out, for the record, that neither you nor anyone in your group has ever stayed at the Arctic Chalet…..

About the road, I will say that the ITH gravel road is unique. Most people drive in the middle of the road on a main track until a vehicle is seen coming towards them. To avoid washboard and pot holes drivers weave from one side of the road to the other to avoid hitting them and making them worse for other travellers. I was simply following the tracks.

This gravel road is very hard on vehicles, and screws and bolts do work their way loose at times. I am sorry that some of the screws came loose on the overhead rack near the back of the bus but was confident after checking it out that it would hold until we got back to the shop where the repair could be done properly.

The glass in the door of the bus was hit by a rock and our shop temporarily fixed the door to be safe for driving until the parts for the new door arrive from Spain.

I made this trip possible for you and your whole group of 19 young people for the price of 2 people which I think most of you appreciated. I also hope that you appreciated my invitation for you and your group to come to The Arctic Chalet for a free kennel tour so that you and the other youth could see our white huskies and enjoy holding and photographing our little puppies.

Finally, I want to say that I enjoyed, as always, hosting another trip to the Arctic Ocean with the YMCA group of 17-year-olds.

Expérience négative: We decided to go on a roadtrip to the arctic for our Honeymoon. Walking into the lobby of the main Chalet, you are hit with this warm, musty smell. Again, id excuse this if the weather was 25 degrees outside, but we were being hit by a lovely arctic front during our stay, so temperatures were in the low double digits. The windows full of dead bugs, a sad sofa (no life left in the cushions and hadn't looked like it had been introduced to a vacuum at any point during its life) and layers of dust. No one was at the front desk, even though we had called ahead saying we'd be there shortly to check in. We called the number on the front desk, spoke to Judi, who said she'd be right down. A couple of minutes later, a lovely girl came out, introduced herself (it wasn't Judi) and got unto the process of getting settled. During this conversation it became clear that there had been a miscommunication on when we were Intending to stay, our dates had been mixed up, mistakes happen and I honestly believe that this was no one's fault. The lovely girl who checked us in was courteous, came up with a solution to the issue and was chatting away with us about how the mistake happened etc, this is when Judi appeared from behind the reception desk, and asked what the issue was. We explained that it was Judi who we had spoken to about a month ago on the phone, changing the dates of the stay. She denied this conversation ever happening, then pulled out a paper calendar and said if it isn't in the calendar then it didn't happen, she then had the gall to say to my wife "Don't you know that a verbal conversation isn't an agreement, always get things in writing, we've fixed this problem and given you a night in the best cabin at a reduced rate, it's so nice in there id stay there myself! You're very lucky" It didn't feel lucky, and also, it wasn't Judi who provided that solution, it was the employee. This whole interaction was incredibly awkward  came across very aggressive and really upset us. We drove the truck round to the cabin, let ourselves in. It was nothing to write home about, just a bog standard log cabin. We had a view of a bush, my truck, the cabin next door and another bush. For a cabin that is based in the arctic, it was incredible to see that in mid summer, the curtains on the window were about as useless as single ply toilet paper. This cabin also had the same, musty smell that it shared with the main lobby. If this was the best cabin, god knows what the rest of the cabins were like. It was at the moment that we decided that we didn't want this on our Honeymoon, we'd met some incredible people in Inuvik and Tuk, and the interaction with Judi really affected us, completely different experience from everyone else we'd interacted with in the north. So we decided to leave. While peeling out of the property grounds, we called the chalet to let them know we wouldn’t be staying. We thought it would be courteous seeing as there were very few beds in town available. Judi answered the phone, angrily asking “what wasn’t good enough for us?” When my wife explained she didn’t feel comfortable staying, Judi continued to argue, telling her it was their nicest cabin & we were lucky to get it at such a discounted rate. My wife calmly & politely repeated they were welcome to rent it to someone else, that we wouldn’t be staying. Judi then said “so I guess you’re telling me you’re cancelling.” My wife said something along the lines of “we’re not looking for anything, as I’ve said, you can rent it out to someone else, I’m only calling so you know you have the space.” My wife then said goodbye & hung up. Even in leaving, not asking for a refund, the owner still wanted to treat us poorly. In what world is this any form of customer service, especially to two paying customers on their honeymoon? We drove to the Mackenzie Hotel, managed to score a cancelation ( we were ready to just camp in the truck like we had done on the way up the dempster) and enjoyed the rest of our trip. Also check out their discriminatory job postings on their website!

Arctic Chalet LTD

Dear Harry and your wife,
Thank you for your detailed review. We’re sorry to hear that your stay was disappointing and that it affected your honeymoon.
The first impression you got is very surprising to us. So far no one complained about weird smells, and the area around the reception is being cleaned every day. The couch is the only thing that might have looked a bit dusty, however that's caused by the sunlight beating down on it almost 24/7. It is in fact being vacuumed - every day.
We appreciate you acknowledging the staff who helped you and wish things had gone better, including your experience with Judi. It’s also a shame we didn’t know about these issues during your stay, as we would have liked the opportunity to fix them or make things right. Please know we’re always happy to discuss concerns directly at the office.
Regarding hiring practices, we want to clarify that all requirements are legal and intended to keep a certain standard for our industry. The owners do reserve the right to choose staff based on what they believe is best for the business. Our staff does get the opportunity to take part in cultural events in town. The website might be a bit misleading in that regard. No one is a prisoner here, and employees know what they sign up for upfront.
We understand the photos on our website may not always reflect the current condition of our cabins. To increase the transparency, we have taken new pictures and uploaded them to both Google and soon to our website. We’ll also sew some black out curtains. As my common law Lea and I have started to take a more active role in managing the property, we’re trying our best to improve everything and we mostly appreciate your feedback.
Again, we’re sorry we didn’t meet your expectations. If you’re ever back in the area, we hope you’ll give us another shot to provide a better experience.
Best Regards
Clemens

Expérience fantastique: Our group of 12 stayed here before AND after our 12 day Firth River trip. It was the perfect accommodation for us to do all of our food and gear packing and organizing from. Olaf and Judy were on vacation our first couple of nights but Lea was very accommodating to us for all of our last minute needs. She is certainly the hostess with the mostest. Expérience négative: Poor customer service. I was unable to attend and was charged regardless. They really stick to the 48 hour cancellation policy even if you are an evacuee. No sympathy at all and very unaccommodating!! I can see from other reviews that you were still booking, and had a very busy summer. I was evacuated and now I have a nearly $1000 charge due to an unforeseeable event. Greedy is an understatement. Thank goodness the NWT consumer complaint division assisted and I got a $284 refund!!! PS. The Airbnb in Tuktoyaktuk (Tuktu B&B) was very helpful and accommodating and did not charge me at all.

Arctic Chalet LTD

The Arctic Chalet has a 48 hour cancellation policy as indicated on our website but also on the signature of each email. You had booked a car for four days, a cabin for two nights and a tour on another day.
You only contacted us on the last day of your booking as you noticed that your card was charged. You never cancelled your booking. All people traveling from and through Yellowknife cancelled their booking with us as soon as the evacuation notice was released.
Unfortunately, according to our policy, we had the obligation to charge you as there was a no show. We had a very busy summer this year and other people had to be turned away.
Please note that we only charged you a two day car rental instead of four and two day cabin rental and not the tour.
We are sorry for the inconvenience but I hope you understand that without a cancellation notice, we had to hold your booking.

Expérience fantastique: We had a wonderful 2 night stay at this chalet. Lovely dogs dragged sled for a morning walk, a scene never to be expected in cities. The rooms are comfortable and spacious. Full kitchen gives us freedom of cook our own meal after the trip to Tuktoyaktuk. The chalet is located perfectly cross the Welcome to Inuvik sign, 150kms to and from Tuktoyaktuk. The internet connection (Starlink!) is way beyond my expectations in such a remote location. A much appreciated plus for visitors coming from cities.

Expérience négative: If you like a roughing it ...good enough type of experience then the reindeer is for you..nineteen seventies trailer converted to a multi occupant duplex. Very crooked and comes with mice and the flies to feed them. When you do dishes your over welmed with the stench of sewer gas from the shower drain. When asked for mice traps I was given urinal pucks ....to set around the unit...I tried to make the best of the situation but I couldn't. When I left they charged me for 2 additional night as they had a 48 hour cancelation notice....needless to say I won't be back anytime soon. Judy thanks for the experience of a lifetime! Hope the Huskies get treated better than the guests.

Arctic Chalet LTD

For sure this trailer looks pretty bad on the outside because we have been short staffed and had no time ourselves to do the external renovations this summer. It was a very busy summer and there was a real shortage of hotel rooms in town so we made the trailer available to tourists and contractors. The people that stayed there were very grateful that they had a clean place to stay with comfortable beds, a good kitchen, private bath and satellite TV for a reasonable price although the unit was not perfect and needed some maintenance. The gentleman in the neighboring unit has been staying there for the past 6 months on a work project and really likes this unit and peaceful quiet setting. He preferred this place to staying in one of our more charming cabins because the price was right and it had the necessary amenities. I am sorry that this place was not for you and I hope next time you come to Inuvik you can find a place that is more suitable to your liking.

Karina Meridji 2 years ago

Expérience fantastique: They were able to accommodate us last minute which is an oddity during the summer out here. The beds are comfortable and the cabins are beautiful and clean. It’s located only a few minutes out of town by car and a 3 minute walk to the water. Highly recommend this place.

Arctic Chalet LTD

Really appreciate your kind words! Thank you!

Expérience positive: The cabins are adequate for what they charge, though the view from the Northwood cabin made us feel like we were in the middle of a scrapyard (surrounded by junk/old cars/etc). Still, it was good enough to sleep in so no big deal. Can't say the same about their car rentals. We wanted to drive up to Tuk, which is a 3 hour drive on a rough washboard road with no services or cellular. The rental vehicle they gave us for this trip was an old yellow GMC Jimmy. Both rear tires were very low on air and almost bald, the check engine light was on, it reeked of antifreeze when running and was hard to shift from park to drive. Needless to say, we took it back. When given this info, the owner made excuses and told us 'that's the typical shape cars are in up here,' 'it's better to have low tire pressure on those roads' and that 'it had made 100 trips up to Tuk with no problem.' I'm familiar with vehicles and I know a beater when I see one. Those tires would have blown their beads on that washboard road guaranteed if we had proceeded. Anyway, they gave us a discount rate for the tour bus ride they operate to Tuk, so we were still able to go. Nice people, but they should really consider the liability they are taking on when renting a piece of junk to people for a trip down a long and desolate road.

Arctic Chalet LTD

Hello Lucia,
I am not sure if you stayed at the Arctic Chalet as your name does not appear in our registration book but I think your husband made the booking and you stayed with us last week.
Please know that apart from booking your cabin and vehicle by email, I never met or talked with you or your husband at your check in or check out.
But I can explain the situation :Your husband booked 2 nights with us and you were charged for 2 nights. Even though we let you know that we are closed on saturdays and after your insistence, we did arrange a car rental on saturday as well as your check in.
At the moment of checking in you let us know that you would only spend one night with us. Unfortunately our cancellation policy is 48h before check in date, that is why you were charged for the second night that you had booked.
For your information, check out time is 11 AM and the time on your receipt shows 3h later.
I hope this makes sense to you.

Arctic Chalet LTD

Dear Thomas,
We are very sorry to hear that you were unsatisfied with your stay.
Our website does not mention any breakfast and unfortunately we do not provide any food services.
The view showed on the picture is from the deck of the cabin and shows coolers and microwaves that were stored for the day and removed by the end of the afternoon. Yet, you had a beautiful view from your bedroom with just trees and tundra and no view to another cabin.
Cleanliness and comfort are our most concerns and we are always trying to improve our cabins. Again we are very sorry about your experience and we are making sure to train our staff in housekeeping.
We hope your stay with us did not take away your good memories with your friends, from our flying tour.

Expérience positive: It was a nice experience overall. Dog sledding was fun. They were able to provide me a rental car in just 2 days' notice, which later made my trip one of the most adventurous in my life. The chalet was nice too. The only thing that led me to give them a 3-star rating is the fact that they charged me an extraordinary amount because I couldn't afford the time to go and get gas before returning the vehicle. I had a plane to catch, the schedule was tight and I even took their airport shuttle service. When I saw the added extra on my bill, it was quite shocking. I didn't tell anything to them at that moment because it would have ruined everyone's mood. I would've given them a 3.5-star rating but that's not possible. TLDR: A better experience than living in the Hotel. You can see the aurora from the window but make sure you fill up the gas tank before returning your vehicle.

Expérience fantastique: Absolutely peaceful! I loved the peace and quiet during a hectic business trip. And the white Huskies were beautiful. Nice people! Friendly staff!

Expérience fantastique: We were there a few years ago. Family of 5, 2 rooms with a kitchen and bathroom. and a groovy little propane stove to use on the deck. We were able to have a memorable trip to Tuk, and do a lot of site seeing. There were many photo books to look through to see the animals and scenery of the North. The host was a wealth of information and kindness, while we were there, and before the trip. My 3 girls had a wonderful time walking the huskies on site with the staff (actually being walked by the huskies). It was a great stay

Expérience fantastique: The Arctic Chalet provided us with exceptional service, valuable tours and activities, and all around great hospitality. We spent three nights at the Arctic Chalet enjoying snowmobiling, dog mushing, and a trip up to Tuk to experience local foods (scheduled by the Arctic Chalet owners). I would highly recommend this to anyone, and wish I had more time myself. Looking forward to visiting again in the future.

Expérience positive: The Arctic Chalet is located a short distance from the town centre of Inuvik. It's a family run business that caters to tourists to the area, offering many Arctic adventures. They have a pack of around 20-30 huskies they use for sledding which you can pay to do, and sometimes dogs need adopting! Rooms are cost and warm, and the bed/bedding is really comfortable! Unfortunately some construction was underway during our stay so we didn't have an entirely peaceful stay, but it's a good place to rest up before a challenging drive to Tuktoyaktuk, if that's your plan! Breakfast is included by means of cereals and tea/coffee options, and you can also rent vehicles that are slightly older than car rental agencies would have, but at a cheaper rate. Overall a cute place to stay, especially if you love dogs, as long as you're prepared for their spontaneous and sometimes early-morning group howls!

Expérience fantastique: This is by far one of the best places to stay up in the North for a true arctic experience. In the summer, they offer dogsled rides pulling atvs for about 30 minutes as they educate you about the dogs and what they do. The cabins are good for their price, and the bugs are tolerable far enough away from the lake. The dogs are a good alarm at 7 as well!

Expérience négative: Facilities are adequate, but the manager was very pushy regarding their tuk tours

Expérience positive: Great experience. Did the Tuk flight tour. Competitive pricing. Not cheap overall but cheaper than a flight in BC on a sea plane from Victoria to Vancouver. So for being very rural pricing was good. Wished we got to shop in Tuk for souvenirs. Would recommend everyone do the Tuk tour. Bring bug spray though. Lots of mosquitoes in summer. So nice in Tuk. Arctic chalet set everything up. Flew us there and back and got tours of Tuk. They have rv camping as well which is convenient. One day will have to go back in winter and rent a cabin and do the dog sleds. They were very nice to us and our kids. Warm showers included if you stay which was nice.

Expérience fantastique: Great owners. Did a tuk tour through them. An awsome experience. They worked hard to get our tour set up on our schedule. The chalet and accomodation was beautiful and their pack of sled dogs was amazing.

Expérience fantastique: I have been twice to the Arctic Chalet; once in March 2014 with the Winter Dempster Package and once in March 2015 with the Cabin-to-Cabin Dogsledding Package. Anyone looking for a true Arctic adventure should do either of these, or even better, do both. Start with the Dempster Package: drive Canada's most northern highway; cross the Arctic Circle; learn to drive a dog team; snowmobile; drive the Mackenzie River ice road to Tuktoyaktuk on the Arctic Ocean and enjoy Judi and Olav's northern hospitality at their wilderness cabin. The Dogsledding Package is all about the dogs: they are beautiful animals, extremely well-trained and very friendly. And there is no greater thrill than driving a six-dog team the 47 km to the Jimmy Lake camp: looking after your dogs, having a delicious meal, then camping overnight in a heated tent. And seeing the Northern Lights at night. In both packages, you are in very safe and experienced hands with Judi and Olav; they look after their guests really well and they don't let you take any risks or do anything stupid. The cabins at the Arctic Chalet are very clean and comfortable; and the wilderness cabin is too. And if you go, don't forget your bathing suit for the outdoor cedar hot tub at the wilderness cabin. We're going back early in 2016. Can't wait.
