Our comment from TraTraTravel about VIA Rail Canada Inc:
VIA Rail Canada Inc offers an efficient and comfortable travel experience across Canada, making it a popular choice for those looking to avoid the stress of driving. Many customers appreciate the clean and well-maintained stations and the friendly, helpful staff who go out of their way to assist passengers. The option to choose seats when booking online is also a notable advantage, providing a sense of personal comfort during travel.
However, some users have reported issues with delays being quite frequent, which can be frustrating, especially when traveling on schedule-dependent trips. Additionally, while the ticket pricing can be perceived as high, many still find the overall experience worth the cost.
Overall, VIA Rail is often described as a great way to travel, particularly for those preferring a more relaxed journey without the typical hassles of air travel.
VIA Rail Canada Inc: Reviews
Negative experience: I have traveled four times from Toronto to ottawa and the train never run on time. Try and avoid the service they are pathetic at time management.
Fantastic experience: Booked tickets online to go from Oshawa to Quebec City. Statiom was very quiet in the morning. One side is used for GO and the other for VIA. Station opened at 6 45 am. Our train was at 7:15 am. The lady at the counter was so kind. She made sure everyone knew which platform to go to you get on the correct train. Will definitely travel with VIA again !
Fantastic experience: Nice new train in Car#1 , I like today you can choose your seats when you purchase your ticket online.
Fantastic experience: Good service is the Best
Fantastic experience: My first Via train ride was great except for the additional 1 hour to and from my destination.
Positive experience: The train is delayed almost every trip. My daughter takes it often, and every single time, it's delayed . I thought the trains would be better than planes, but it's not. Traveling in Canada is so frustrating. I'm trying to get my daughter to her home semi early but to no avail! I don't care for compensating discounts. I would rather get her to and from on time. As parents, we have to accommodate taking her to and from.
Fantastic experience: Good clean station, much better than expected. It was more straightforward than Union station to find locations and there were actual people around visible to help. If you are looking for an alternative to Union, in case using Via Rail heading East from suburb, this can be a good option. More parking, less crowd, cheaper ticket and away from Downtown especially if it's a weekend
Negative experience: I wish the station was opened 24 hours. I've had to wait outside in the cold a few times.
Negative experience: The phone number from Google Maps didn't work.
Negative experience: One of the biggest rip offs in travel in this country.Workers telling customers to get on a train that was the wrong one. Trains are not clean, tables are broken. Np discounts for students. It's cheaper to travel most of Europe on train than to take a train from Kingston to Oshawa. Navigation on the Via website is horrible.
Fantastic experience: Do yourself a favour, take the train. Such amazing service
Negative experience: No long term parking available. So be prepared to park in GO transit overflow parking and then call GO transit to give them your car info and license plate to avoid a ticket.
Fantastic experience: Great train ride. Was on time. Was great service and I enjoyed it very much I will take the train again for sure … even provided updates the whole way that way if u are meeting anyone at the other end they know exactly what time u will arrive
Fantastic experience: We were travelling to Ottawa for business and this was a quick easy way to do it. The new station at Guildwood was where we boarded and it was super clean and fresh looking. Booking was done online and was fast and easy with straightforward instructions and payment. At the station VIA staff came off the train to ensure you were boarding the correct train. Check your email for updates as they are sent to keep you in the know.
Positive experience: Parking is a nightmare
Positive experience: Staff are always pleasant. Cars are hot or miss in terms of comfort and update. Delayed twice today over 3 hours late. Give you 50% back.
Positive experience: Great way to travel
Fantastic experience: Very clean and well maintained. Accessible and well run. Station of choice for me.
Positive experience: No rush no tension on time. Go train they have huge parking lot
Fantastic experience: Very very nice they help me all the time.
Positive experience: VIA Rail and GO run a very clean, organized station. Customer service staff are excellent.
Positive experience: Nice fast train service. Comfy seats and very fast. Customer service were very nice as well
Positive experience: Well maintained and clean. Not what you would typically expect in a train station. Well done, VIA Rail and Go Transit.
Fantastic experience: Despite being delayed for over an hour. The service was amazing
Negative experience: Not built for comfort.
Fantastic experience: Clean, very well maintained, great staff, and lots of space. Well done GO!
Positive experience: Great service, I just wish their were on time more…. So many delays all the time
Fantastic experience: Ahdia was fantastic to my sister and I. She helped to take care of us when we really needed it without hesitation. We were completely out of breath from sprinting after missing our train, and she provided us with waters and snacks, and calmed us through all the panic. She was amazing in the situation. I wish the best upon Ahdia, and thank her many times for her service.
Fantastic experience: Great experience
Fantastic experience: Excellent
Positive experience: Just the pick-up. Train was late, but by only 10 mins. Easy pick-up.
Fantastic experience: So these automatic doors they added, what an utter waste of money and effort. Nobody knows how to use them, and when they do figure them out, they're so slow they open them by hand anyway. Good job.
Positive experience: I prefer rail travel to all other forms of transportation when it's done right. VIA Rail does it mostly right. I took the train from Oshawa to Montreal. Buying tickets online is easy, but the baggage information is weighty and unclear. When I traveled just after Christmas, the policy was lenient, but be aware that large suitcases can be potentially charged in the Economy classes. Note: Google or Apple Wallet is handy for storing your Boarding Pass. As for the Oshawa station, going Eastbound, you must go up and over the tracks. Fortunately, an elevator is available. There's a warm waiting area above. At track level, the enclosed area is small. A major area of confusion is the train(s). The Ottawa/Montreal-bound train is the same. It's separated at Cornwall. Bizarre! For example, for the 9:11 am departure(s), train 52 and 62 are joined for part of the voyage. As for the trip. You pay for beverages and the agents aboard are few. VIA must assign at least three agents aboard or have the agents circulate more often. One passenger insisted on laughing like a lunatic incessantly. Frequent patrols by VIA staff would reduce the likelihood of such behavior. To VIA's credit, the agent in our wagon serving beverages was exceptional and well-trained. Arriving in Montreal was a whole different ball game. Lots of staff and plenty of guidance (which made up for the lack of it in Oshawa). I recommend traveling with VIA. It's a pity that more people don't use the system. If people did, a high speed rail link along the Windsor corridor would be more likely.
Fantastic experience: Sent my parents on a weekend trip from Oshawa to Ottawa and back again. They were extremely impressed with the quality of service, the cleanliness and the ease of traveling with VIA. They definitely look forward to travelling again on the train. Thanks VIA!
Negative experience: Disappointed in Via Rail 102.00$ to go to Toronto and back to Cobourg for a CT scan at Princess Margaret Hospital. Seniors get shafted at Via Rail. So I drove to Oshawa and took the GO Train for 12$ both ways. Our government is out of touch to the needs of its people.
Fantastic experience: Just make sure you are on the platform early
Positive experience: Nice location. Clean looking.
Positive experience: I take via a lot cause of living in Ottawa, pricy for food and ticket but good staff for the most part
Positive experience: It was good Navigation can be little it confusing, but can be managed if follow other travellers Doors are not sensored or automatic, ingress and egress are bit difficult if hands are not free.
Fantastic experience: My favorite transport
Fantastic experience: It was quiet, sunrise was a scene to witness, warm and cozy, nice little station with a sitting area on the first floor. Good seating arrangements, for the washroom you have to walk to the other building though. Display boards aptly stationed. Room elevators. No coffee or breakfast near by.
Positive experience: Always fun
Fantastic experience: Service is very good. The meals are good.
Fantastic experience: Great place
Fantastic experience: Great way to travel especially if you hate traffic. Or like me, are a tall individual that hates long car rides. Taking the train may be best for you
Fantastic experience: Clean friendly staff
Fantastic experience: It's a train station!!
Fantastic experience: Very helpful pleasant staff. Trains are very clean and train staff are very helpful and professional. I walk with s cane and every Vis staff member was more than willing to help me. Thank you Via gor such a pleasant experience. Will be using Via as much as possible. Thank you
Positive experience: Hard to find from the street because it's underground
Fantastic experience: An exceptional experience, really a good option for any city between Montreal and Toronto. I believe this is much faster, very affordable and less trouble than using the airplane and going through the airport lines.
Negative experience: Not so much the station more the quality of travel. I have traveled over 200 times in the last 20 years on the Montreal Ottawa line. I always travel business class and never in all that time have I ever been served a remotely edible meal . Judging by the much better quality of the meals for the non-vegetarians, it is clear that VIA rail has nothing but contempt for vegetarians and vegans. The food served to us is contemptible . Even the wines are terribly substanded. There are much better quality Canadian wines than are served. You would think VIA would want to highlight all that was best about Canada, not mediocre corporate products that are not fit to consume . After my first half dozen trips I started to bring my own food and wine . After all, a five to seven hour trip on a train is a long time to go without a meal . Occasionally the staff would ask me what I was eating and drinking. One or two of them were even brave enough to taste some of the wines (not the food of course!) . I'm not asking for much, just for the standard of the vegetarian options to be at least equal to those of the meat eaters. I've been waiting for over 25 years and while it has got a tiny bit better in that time, no doubt I will be dead before it even begins to approach anything remotely edible.
Fantastic experience: Pretty good. Smooth.

Positive experience: The station was clean and spacious. Bathrooms could be cleaned more often. There was little to eat, but the station has a mobile Tim Hortons on site, though it was closed on a Sunday when I was there. I did like the travel vending machine with pharmacy products, which is very convenient.
Positive experience: Very big parking lot, convenient if you can find a parking space.
Positive experience: comfortable seats, pleasant staff but don't count on having more than a couple drinks, they only stock 2 of each alcoholic bev per car. ticket pricing is hefty, as well, which may make it an unreasonable option for people who own a car. it was nice to relax from Oshawa to Montreal but I would seriously consider driving in future. some of the stations (like Oshawa) are not at all good for people with any sort of mobility issues. the steps from the train are narrow and steep and no one offers assistance. the Montreal train station is beautiful - very clean. We did find that the underground hallways leading to the station were difficult to manage with luggage - several places had stairs with no ramps. again, not helpful for anyone with mobility concerns.
Fantastic experience: Great station! Even has a Tim Hortons stand outside!
Fantastic experience: Clean and efficient location.
Fantastic experience: This is based on the station as I've never been in a Via train. The station is now amazing compared to the original station
Fantastic experience: Very friendly staff. Ahdia is a very kind and helpful person.
Positive experience: When inquiring about the differences in the prices and what incentives one would get for paying more. Was told all prices are for a seat and the ride to ur destination No perks for more money Not even a free coffee Wth.
Fantastic experience: Very easy transportation. I enjoyed my trip to ottawa
Fantastic experience: The teain was about 10 mins late, other then that all is good.
Positive experience: Train was 5 mins late, not a big deal. I was worried about parking availabilities - lots of spots at 640 AM in the main lot. Not a big station. Tim Hortons here too.
Positive experience: Pretty good service . Train is on time mostly .
Positive experience: Service is nice, comfortable and runs as per the schedule. Only thing what is lacking behind is the speed, it should be faster from Oshawa. Ticket price is on higher side.
Positive experience: The building is clean
Positive experience: Excellent. More washrooms required
Positive experience: Best service, good trains
Fantastic experience: It was a good ride, a little late but nothing we could do.
Positive experience: People generally underestimate how efficient, quick, and affordable train commuting is between long distances.
Negative experience: Does not allow bicycles. Extremely disappointing.
Negative experience: Large group of noisy via rail employees in bussiness class that talked anr stood in group in the area near the toilets allmost the entire trip from toronto to montreal . Ignoring advice to stay in their seats while train moving at speed . Their incessant chatter about everything kept me from getting any rest at all. Also wifi not working most of the trip .
Negative experience: Other then the actual trip awful experience! Paid 650+$ for everything for a teenager and 1 parent so 2 people only going from Windsor to Oshawa On the trip there we got some snacks and a small water bottle was 3$ and 60g lays chips is also 3$ Single can of coke was 2$ very overpriced! After a few hours we wanted more snacks and we told the guy to ask the lady to bring the kart but she didn't and she made us wait one hour until she finally brought it!! But my biggest complain is the AWFUL wifi, it's really really slow, trying to send a single photo to people took more then 10 minutes at one point and not to mention there network blocks youtube or any video sites and if you wana play any games that require an internet connection forget about it because it will never work!! It was very frustrating because they clearly say they have internet on their trains and nothing about most sites being blocked! And no this is not the first time I've been riding on thease trains for years and this is always the case! I personally do not recommend this train company and unless they improve i won't recommend it but it's not like we have a choice!
Fantastic experience: There’s only one VIA attendant there but he was very helpful and informative. Told us which letter on the platform to stand by according to our Car # and helped with luggages. Honestly the GO train/Metrolinx side needs more station attendants like VIA. They’ll actually help you and not just point you to the machines to deal with yourself.
Fantastic experience: Loved my first business class experience. All staff contacts were so friendly and helpful. Can't wait to ride the rails again. Trip was Oshawa to Ottawa return. The business lounge in Ottawa was a great place to pass the time. So relaxing.
Fantastic experience: VIA train experience is great... easy to get on and get going to your destination. Much more efficient than taking an air plane.!. No waiting times....get on , relax , have a drink or breakfast/lunch.
Fantastic experience: Go train. Best way to travel
Fantastic experience: VIA Rail is actually very clean and safe at this location. There's very good security, hand sanitizer available, and from what I've learned it's quite a quick way to get to Quebec if you don't drive. These trains go across Canada, are an antiquity for routes. A monster of history that is both controversial in its building, and a dreamed necessity that even provided "The Group of Seven" trip's in a converted boxcar and handcar for remote places to paint! VIA took over both Canadian National Railway (CN) and Canadian Pacific Railway (CP) in 1978. The prices are outstanding for the comfort of travel across and around a Great Country. This is one of the most scenic tracks on the planet.
Negative experience: They were disappointing in how they treat people who are on disability.
Positive experience: It was great but expensive to compare others transportation, moreover it's very convenient for people.
Fantastic experience: They are very friendly and they help me out. I am in a wheelchair and they took me to my spot and got me on the train.
Positive experience: Spent a pleasant four hours from Oshawa to Ottawa. Lots of legroom. The rolling stock is old and this is not high speed rail. The quality of the customer service staff was first class.
Negative experience: Train was supposed to leave at 7 pm then they delayed it to 8 pm then a train finally came at 9:45 pm what a long frustrating day. I didn’t get home until 1 am the train service is not good at all that’s why I rate 1 star. Never again taking plane next time!
Positive experience: The fact that you can buy at the same price a airplane ticket is something to think about before riding with VIA. Even water isn’t free. At least with an airline you’ll have full service with snacks and beverages.
Positive experience: Minimal fuss for my first time here, although without a phone you can find things a bit awkward. Only one ticket machine (that I saw), and many people wanting tickets. No counter service. Personnel there to give a hand though
Positive experience: I love taking the train
Positive experience: Have to go up and then down again to the platforms
Negative experience: Not enough staff to help new people to the station to find where they are going.
Fantastic experience: Great experience
Positive experience: On Go train from Oshawa to Union Station.
Fantastic experience: Good service in both French and English
Negative experience: Worst ever. Don't take cash!! This is unacceptable and my last time on this train. Rude staff,
Fantastic experience: I was worried about the strike, but it didn't affect my travel too much. I only had a 15 min delay on my return trip. The staff were friendly and helpful, and my trip was relaxed and uneventful.
Fantastic experience: One of the great transit systems customer friendly very clean and helpful to us especially good friends be around metrolinks great friends are enjoying the ride as a group very helpful via train Montreal
Positive experience: I have done many trips, but I noticed that the train from Montreal to Quebec city most likely to be late.
Fantastic experience: Very friendly staff and services. They follow timings, cleanliness, ticket checking, queues, mask checking, communication, food services in a very professional way. Their service is Far better than many other countries. I'm impressed with the average speed and top speed of the via rail train. Average is 90kmph and top speed which I observed was 160kmph in the Guildwood-Ottawa line. Push back seats for economy class. They allow you to eat meals which you bring from outside. Seats are very spacious and has more leg room. They make sure that everyone has on boarded the train from the stations which doesn't have ticket counters. They wait and start which is impressive.
Fantastic experience: Good views outside.
Positive experience: I just like!
Positive experience: A little pricey for last minute bookings, so be sure to book well in advance!
