Tyler Caughill and Norbert Pietkiewicz own and operate AquaSub Scuba Diving Centre, a truly first class 5-Star PADI Training Centre and complete dive shop. Both Tyler and Norbert are at once engaging, funny, and extremely knowledgeable on everything diving and snorkeling. You can be assured of excellent service, fair pricing, and in-depth sound advice, recommendations, and training and equipment. Their superbly socialized mascots, Hugo (~18-wk-old French Bulldog pup) and Otto (8-yr -old French Bulldog), welcome and screen all guests, making sure you you will always be in the company of only the finest clientele! It is worth the trip to AquaSub just to meet them. Of course, after Hugo and Otto melt your heart you will be totally immersed and taken with all that AquaSub has to offer. As a rusty veteran diver of 90 dives from 1984 to 1999, I had the pleasure of taking a PADI scuba refresher course with one of AquaSub's superb instructors, Willis Bote, on January 10, 2025, at the Centennial Pool in Richmond Hill. Willis was extremely thorough and knowledgeable, quickly ascertaining the specific needs of the two students in his class (myself and one other "mature" diver), while thoroughly reviewing all of the key aspects of equipment, open water dive skills and safety procedures. Willis was a lot of fun, and ensured we came out of this course confident and ready to go on our next underwater adventures. Expérience négative: I never write bad reviews, but my experience with Tyler was so disappointing, negligent - and worst-of-all - remorseless that I have no other way but this to help fellow divers avoid my experience. Here it is: Feb 10 - I ordered a wetsuit + custom XDeep BCD that I needed for Jun 4. With 4 months left before my departure, Tyler assured me BCD would come within 4-6 weeks and that the wetsuit was easy to get on short notice. Mar 30 - 7 weeks passed with no updates. I eventually called and the wetsuit had arrived; he hadn’t notified me. When I picked it up I found that they ordered the wrong size. Tyler said he would expedite the new suit. Apr - More time passed with no news, I called periodically (every 1-2 wks) to check in. Each time I was told “any day now”. I asked Tyler if he could get in touch with his suppliers, since it was well past the timeline I was given and I had a trip coming up. Each time I called he said he was busy and hadn’t gotten in touch with them yet, and that he planned to later that day. May 2 - I finally got an email from Tyler on May 2 saying my BCD had shipped to New Jersey on its way to the GTA. I replied reiterating my timelines and pleading for any way to expedite the shipping once it arrived in NJ. He never responded. He also never responded to my follow-up emails. When I called, I got the same “I was just about to call them” or “I can’t get a hold of them” that he had told me many times. May 15 - Feeling desperate, I tried to get a hold of the supplier via email and got an answer in 12 hours. It clearly isn’t hard to get in touch with them if you want to. They told me the BCD was being shipped from Poland by May 20, which I found odd given Tyler told me it was on its way already. May 16 - The next day I called Tyler. He told me the BCD shipped to NJ belonged to another customer. He asked them for an update on the wrong customer and mine had not been shipped. I had to call him to learn this, which is disappointing. He said he followed up to find out where mine was, but XDeep didn’t know. They gave me a firm shipping date when I emailed them. He also told me he was expecting the wetsuit any day. When asked when he had placed the order, he told me “a week ago”. With full knowledge of my timelines, he placed the order on May 3 for the wetsuit I purchased and paid for on Feb 10 (83 days later), even after telling me he would expedite the shipment after he got it wrong the first time. In this call I expressed my disappointment firmly. He asked what I wanted him to do; I said (A) do everything you can to get an update on the order and expedite it, and (B) be more proactive about communicating with me. He said he would get an update that same day and call me back before end of day. He did not. May 22 - I still hadn’t heard back 6 days later. I emailed to follow-up. He didn’t respond. May 23 - I called again and he said he hadn’t had time to contact his suppliers and would do it that day. He didn’t. May 27 - At this point I had lost faith that I would get my equipment. I stopped by the shop to get a refund, and told Tyler if the gear arrived before my departure that I would buy it. He said he would do everything in his power to get it, would call the suppliers that day to get tracking information, and offered to deliver it. Jun 4 - On my departure day, I called Tyler one last time. He told me he hadn’t had time to contact the suppliers, and told me that these things sometimes take 6 months, which contradicts what he told me when he took my money and in the countless conversations I had with him in the 115 days between then and my departure. In this last conversation there was no remorse, no learnings, and no admission of fault. While I understand that not everything here was in Tyler’s control, there are many things to learn and I hope that this helps him see that and helps others decide which shop to place their confidence in. It's worth noting that my interactions with Norbert (the other co-owner) were much better, and I suspect working with him would have resulted in a better outcome.

Expérience fantastique: Visited Cienfugos, Cuba April 13-20, 2024 with Aquasub. Norbert, fantastic organizer, instructor and owner of Aquasub. Most divers in my trip were returning divers with Aquasub not once but multiple times, very knowledgeable and great to hang out with. The diving sites are 5 minutes drive from the dock by boat. The diving crew was extremely friendly and helpful in all aspects. Great storage room for your equipment. The hotel, Faro Luna, was clean, spacious with all amenities functional. The food and service was very good. The weather was sunny every day, 20-30 C, with nice breeze from the ocean. The water temperature was 26 C underwater in 40-100 feet depth. Best of all, the value for the trip was amazingly great, $1500/ week, inclusive of everything. Definitely will travel with Aquasub again. Hudson

Expérience fantastique: Cannot express the simplicity of the Cuba trips that Norbert arranges. The location is very accessible (five minute walk from hotel to dive Center) and the little bay is great for gaining confidence while getting to see stuff. While we were in cuba first time we spontaneously did sidemount course and Norbert was a very good patient teacher. We went a second time to cuba and Norbert still spent some time with us trimming up our rig more and giving pointers. I also got to watch him train a 10 year old last trip and I would without hesitation let him teach my girls when they are old enough. Norbert cares about the work that he does and it shows. Do not hesitate booking cuba trips - they do a good job. Tyler we have not dove with but spent time in shop with him. He is very knowledgeable and if you have ever shopped for scuba gear it is very hard to "just pop in for a quick sec" bc of the many many many options. Tyler takes time to talk about different options and seems to always have a thing you need in stock and the rare times he doesn't it is ordered and comes in quickly. I have a dive computer that I bought before I met this shop. It failed while we were in cuba (which is unusual bc was brand new with few dives on it). Norbert lent me while in cuba his personal dive computer and used his back up one. I took it to the shop and Tyler took care of everything even though I did not have a receipt and I did not buy it from them. Anyways - this is a very good shop. They are knowledgeable. They are friendly. They are professional. Only suggestion I would ever have would be to have more photography gear - BUT what they do have is great.

Expérience négative: If there was a separate rating system I would have given 5 stars for the pool training. It was great. Dealing with Tyler however left a sour taste in my mouth. My husband & I were very understanding that we didn't leave much time for open water dives before our trip, but when someone says to you 3 times, that they may have something, but they don't bother to get back to you when they say they will is very unprofessional. On top of that, when I decided to contact Tyler myself he was very short & dismissive. It was apparent that I was annoying to him, not worth his time or money & once again didn't call back like he said he would. If you don't care to or are unable to get us dives, all you have to do is be transparent about it & not leave us waiting for a dead end. I guess we will be buying all our gears & booking our advanced trip elsewhere. I have no patience for that treatment.

I have also been diving in Cuba for many years with the Aquasub team and have received additional PADI certifications from what I consider to be one of the best instructors out there. That said, I have been diving with them in Cuba this year already for 3 weeks and will be taking my partner there for her 50th B-Day next month making it my 4th week this year. The diving is incredible, I cannot say enough about the staff at Aquasub, Scuba Cuba and the dive shop. For the price, seriously, it's hard to believe and this review might work against me in the long run dollar wise :-) The sites are awesome from the Labyrinth to the Chimney! Cienfuegos is beautiful friendly city full of smiles and culture! If you are willing to grab a cab and go to town, great experiences await you.

Expérience fantastique: I signed up for the introductory to scuba, it was supposed to be for a couple of hours but it was more than 3 hours from the beginning to the end of the lesson. Very well done, from the theory until the experience in the pool at Centennial. Didn't cut it short for going in overtime, I had the chance to try out the equipment and learn various procedures like get the water out from the goggles, switch the mouthpiece, how to deal with no air, how to adjust the pressure in the BCD to hover in deep water. Loved it, all new but the instructor never rushed us.

Expérience fantastique: Went to Marea del Portillo, Cuba for Scuba Diving. The locals working at the dive shop were really nice and helpful; one of the guys actually repaired my BCD which was malfunctioning. Norbert took us to lots of great places like a little island where we had a pig roast and a local restaurant which served amazing food.

Expérience négative: -STAY AWAY- from AquaSub Scuba Centre if you are going to do something like training and certification or travel to Cuba. I’m going to tell you my story and you decide whether believe or not. I started with AquaSub Scuba Center for Dive Master Course Internship and certification in May 2018. Course Director Tyler said “we just busy now, do PADI eLearning program and when you done come to us”. Owner of the shop, Norbert said we will make you best Dive Maser ever. I said, very well, I have completed eLearning and came to the shop again in June, Course Director Tyler said we just busy now but you can start Internship by helping our Dive Instructors with students in the pool and lake. So, I took this assignment with enthusiasm and helped them as much I can. Unfortunately most of my job was just carry tanks and gears from the shop to the pool and then back. Only once I was allowed to demonstrate one on the diving skills. I slaved for them until September. For the time being, neither Norbert nor Tyler tried to spend a minute with me with training. I do not know why, but I always have been on their lowest priority, bottom of the list. Maybe because of my nationality? So, asked when? When? They spent about 2 hours to test me and couple other candidates on stamina in a pool. Only I swam 400 meters no-stop and pass the stamina test that day. I'll have to be trained and tested on 24 diving skills. At the end of September nobody put any effort to conduct my training. They were busy with something but me, I’ve being patient, hopping I will be noticed and attended. I asked Norbert if I go the diving tour in Cuba can we do some training over there? Norbert responded: “Sure, we will do everything there”. I’ve been in that Cuba resort already once with AquaSub Scuba a year ago in 2017, poor cheap resort, staff begging money, bad food, bad dirty beach, bad and tiny boat, which was broken several times. Poor underwater environment, there is no much species. I can tell more about that Amigo Marea del Portillo resort, if people want. After first visit I decided, I do not go there anymore. But I did, hoping to complete my Dive Master certification, click off $1,800.00 from my credit card + $1,100.00 (Internship) with total a bit more $3,000.00 and go. Norbert, a master of empty promises, did not spend much time for my training during the week diving. So, again empty words. Now is the end of November and Course Director, Tyler said we have missed few training skills those have to be done in open water. It means it cannot be done in Canada now, because the temperature already below freezing. After that I felt cheated and offended, that I was in lowest priority in bottom of their list. I’ve ended with nothing wasted half a year time and $3000 money. I was neglected, they were busy picking up quick money from newbie students. Other diving shops conduct Dive Master Internship during 3-4 weeks’ time, but AquaSub Scuba Centre was not capable to do it in 24 weeks. I paid for the services but AquaSub Center failed to provide the services: training, testing and certifying. So, be caution when they do promises, it will be empty promises. During assisting in the pool and Cuba diving I’ve been a witness that AquaSub Instructors do not follow very much PADI Standards while teaching newbie students. After such “training” would you put your life at risk when you are deep in the ocean? Please be aware.

Our instructor to student ratio was unparalleled and both of our teachers were always at the ready to answer our questions/concerns. As pure novices who bought our own gear but had ZERO idea how to use it, we walked away from our weekend educated, invigorated and not surprisingly, exhausted. Hard work is its own reward!! As devout planners, stepping outside our comfort zone is always cause for nerves and potentially panic. Alex and Chris were steady rudders for us both in the pool and on the deck. Panic underwater simply isn't an option and they ensured that despite our "newbie" status we found our way to success in ALL required elements with maximum learning and minimum drama. I would highly recommend BOTH gentlemen if you're planning to obtain your PADI Open Water Diver certification. Highly experienced, clear communicators and quick witted when needed as well. I signed up for our eLearning in December and finally got to our pool dives in July. AquaSubScuba applied ZERO pressure, no hidden upcharges and exceeded my expectations on all fronts this weekend. We live in Oakville and PROMISE you it's worth the drive to Richmond Hill!!

Turns out there was no need to worry at all. Everything was handled properly and everything promised was realized. The trip was excellent. The diving crew was very helpful , understanding my specific special needs, and made for good dives. I would definitely travel with Aqausub in the future.

Expérience fantastique: I just completed my Padi in-pool referral training with AquaSub and could not be happier with the experience. All of the instructors I dealt with were fantastic; equal parts knowledgeable, patient and easy-going. This shop also has convenient timing for lessons. The course ran on a Friday evening and Saturday afternoon/evening, while other places I found only offered the intensive courses on Saturday/Sunday. I hope to do more training with them in the future.

Expérience fantastique: This review is about my PADI Master Scuba Diver training during the trip to Bonaire with AquaSub Scuba Diving Centre in December 2016. First of all, I would highly recommend taking a Master Scuba Diver course in combination with a diving trip to a sunny destination, if you have at least 30-35 or so logged dives (after a trip you will have the required 50 dives). This course will greatly improve your diving skills, resulting in a more confident, safe and enjoyable diving experience. All these could be done during one diving trip. My training included Emergency First Responder, Rescue Diver, and the following specialties: Deep Diver, Wreck Diver, Night Diver, Drift Diver and Peak Performance Buoyancy. If you do not have an Enriched Air Diver Certification, I would highly recommend taking this specialty instead of one of the above specialties. Secondly, my instructor was Jessica Templin, who is simply the best instructor you could dream of. Her experience and teaching style are unmatched. Basically for all my dives I had a personal instructor, who was providing me with continuous feedback and very useful tips in a gentle and easy to understand manner. All other instructors from AquaSub were very supportive as well. Thank you all! And finally, Buddy Dive Bonaire resort is an excellent dive resort in the amazing Bonaire. The whole atmosphere in the resort and Bonaire is very nice. Most instructors and staff are mainly from Europe, and this adds some additional charm. In summary, if you are planning your next dive trip, consider taking training for PADI Master Scuba Diver with Jessica. Talk to her, ask where and when she is going next and jump aboard. You will not regret.

You then get in the water and are shown how to breath, clear your mask, inflate/deflate. They make sure they spend time with everyone and make sure you are able to do the skills. I've worked in retail before in a sports environment and I know the challenges of doing both instruction and selling in the same capacity. Being a local from Oakville I stumbled upon AquaSub wanting to do my Open Water in the summer conveniently as I worked in Oshawa. I was not disappointed at all. AquaSub was everything I was looking for in a Dive Shop. There are many elements that make AquaSub a clear leader in the aquatic community. Their staff are knowledgeable, well versed in the tools of the trade, able to equip customers of all skills, and able to non-pressure you to make accommodations on what you are comfortable spending on equipment. Secondly, most of the staff are PADI instructors as well adding to the rapport they have with customers both new and repeat. I thoroughly enjoyed my time doing my Open Water and the interaction I had with everyone in the shop. They are definitely passionate about their trade and urgently awaiting new and wide eyed future divers. I would NOT hesitate to recommend AquaSub to ANYONE looking to get into diving. They are worth the drive from wherever you are. Their prices are competitive to others, and they will definitely be seeing me around in the near future for further certifications and trips!

Expérience fantastique: The recent dive trip to Cuba (April 27-May4) was a total success, thanks to Norbert, our diver (and non diver) friends, the local dive shop, and so on... The dive experience was great and I completed the advanced step which was an absolute fun to do with Norbert. The trip, dives, cruises to the dive sites, local foods and goodies, were all part of a unique and fantastic experience I recommend to anyone to be part of.

Expérience fantastique: My girlfriend and I signed up for the Discover course and it was great! It was exactly what we'd hoped to get - a solid first taste of what Scuba diving is like. We spent a good hour in the pool learning how to hook up our equipment to the tank, how to find, breathe, and clear your regulator, and how to use your vest to achieve neutral buoyancy. Would definitely recommend to anyone who's curious about Scuba but doesn't want to commit a lot of money for a learner's course!

Expérience fantastique: Both my wife and I recently were certified for our Open water (Sept 2014 - Tobermory) and Advanced Open Water (December 2014 - Bahamas) with Aquasub. When we were looking for a dive shop we were originally left with a bad taste in our mouths by many dive shops around the GTA. We felt like we were being shamelessly sold into dive gear and certifications until we found Aquasub. They took the time to understand what we were looking to get out of diving and helped plan our training and gear acquisition as we progressed. Our instructors Martyna and Jessica were fantastic, knowledgeable and patient - there was never a dumb question which is nice because you don't want to not ask and put yourself in a dangerous situation. We certified for Open Water in September and were certifying again for Advanced by December which says a lot about our experience and happiness with the shop. Their dive trips down south are a blast and filled completely with local divers who frequent the shop which creates a fun and friendly atmosphere especially for the girls since most dive trips can be intimidating since it can be a male dominated sport. We have been looking for any excuse/opportunity possible to get diving again down south and wouldn't consider going with anyone else! All in all - two thumbs up and highly recommended.

The in pool experience flew by - Martyna made it easy and fun to learn how to navigate what was seemingly an overwhelming amount of equipment. It was one of the best weeks so far in my Scuba Diving career. She maintained a balance of professionalism, and fun the whole time. She kept our mind on task, giving us the opportunity to practise and learn at our own pace while still granting us the time to enjoy ourselves and do what matters most in Scuba....Having fun. We all came into the course to become instructors but at the end of the week felt bitter sweet that it had come to a close although we all passed the IE with flying colours. Great job preparing us for this big transition into PADI instructors, we are all looking forward to taking one of your big trips to Cuba in the near future, and making our next step with you as staff instructors. After all, we are family now.
